To the right: Grand Duke Henri's portrait in half-profile; to the left: Grand Duke Guillaume II on horseback. The commemorative inscription "GROUSSHERZOGE VU LËTZEBUERG – GUILLAUME II 1792 – 1843" runs along the upper left edge. The year "2024" and "175" appear to the lower right. The Paris Mint and Engraver-General Joaquin Jimenez's marks are placed at the right edge; designer Chiara Principe's initials "CP" at the lower edge.
This coin was also issued as a photorealistic strike in a mintage of just 2,500. Grand Duke Guillaume II on horseback was rendered photorealistically. This variant is only included in the official coin set.
Grand Duke Guillaume II (1792–1849), who was also King of the Netherlands, ruled the Grand Duchy from 1840 until his death. His reign saw Luxembourg's first constitution of 1848, which gave the country a liberal framework of government. He is still commemorated today by his equestrian statue on Place Guillaume II (the “Knuedler”) in the heart of Luxembourg City. The 2024 coin marks the 175th anniversary of his death.
