At the centre: the heliocentric model of the solar system as conceived by Copernicus. To the right edge: his portrait in half-profile, looking left. To the lower left: the issuing state "MALTA", the year "2023", and the designer Daniela Fusco's initials "FUSCO". The inscription "NIKOLAUS COPERNICUS 1473 · 1543" runs diagonally from lower left to upper right.
Nicolaus Copernicus, born in 1473 in what was then the Kingdom of Poland, is one of the most consequential natural scientists in European history. With his major work De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, published shortly before his death in 1543, he fundamentally challenged the ancient geocentric worldview: not the Earth, but the Sun forms the centre of the planetary system. This heliocentric model revolutionised astronomical thinking and paved the way for the scientific revolution of the 17th century — from Galileo Galilei to Isaac Newton. Copernicus was no mere theorist; he was a canon in Frauenburg, worked as a physician, and also engaged with monetary theory and economics, marking him as a typical Renaissance polymath.
Malta's involvement in honouring Copernicus in 2023, on the occasion of his 550th birthday, is part of a joint European issue by several euro countries. Malta has been part of the eurozone since 2008 and has since regularly issued commemorative coins addressing both Maltese and pan-European themes. Copernicus stands as a symbolic figure for Europe's shared intellectual heritage — his insights emerged at the intersection of medieval scholarship and early modern research spirit, and lastingly shaped the continent's scientific self-understanding.
