Germany's Federal Ministry of Finance has released the official design of the 2027 German €2 commemorative coin 'Hans-Dietrich Genscher'. The coin is part of the still young series 'Unity and Justice and Freedom' (Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit), which began in 2025 with the €2 coin marking German unity and each year pays numismatic tribute to leading figures of Germany's post-war history. Collectors and history enthusiasts can look forward to a design that puts one of the most influential figures in German diplomacy centre stage.
The design chosen for the national side portrays the long-serving Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. At its heart is a distinctive, finely worked portrait of Genscher that captures his statesmanlike presence. The politician's name 'HANS-DIETRICH GENSCHER' and the dates '1927-2016' are woven harmoniously into the composition. The inner core is completed by the year 2027, the country code 'D' for Germany, the mint mark of the respective mint and the mark of the artist Ulrich Böhme. As usual, the outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European flag.
The issue in 2027 also marks the 100th birthday of Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who was born in Halle an der Saale on 21 March 1927. Genscher is regarded as one of the chief architects of German reunification and shaped the country's foreign policy for decades like few others. His historic appearance on the balcony of the embassy in Prague in September 1989 remains unforgettable – an emotional turning point that paved the way for the fall of the Wall. This coin firmly anchors his tireless commitment to détente, freedom and European stability in collective memory.
The official first day of issue is announced for 18 March 2027. The planned total mintage is 30 million coins, split across Germany's five mints in Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J). Alongside the regular circulation coins, which enter circulation at face value, Münze Deutschland will also release special collector editions in the higher qualities Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof.
