Germany's Federal Ministry of Finance has finally lifted the veil on the official design for the 2027 €2 commemorative coin. The coin is dedicated to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and continues the 'Federal States II' series, which launched successfully back in 2023. As usual, the order in which states are featured follows the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat, Germany's upper house of parliament.
The centerpiece of the national obverse pays tribute to a world-famous architectural masterpiece: Aachen Cathedral, shown together with the adjoining ensemble of buildings at the heart of the city. The striking design comes from artist Michael Otto of Rodenbach. By placing the buildings at eye level and rendering the Katschhof square in fine linework, the design achieves a strikingly realistic perspective — as if the viewer were standing right on the historic square in front of Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alongside the detailed depiction of the cathedral, the coin features the inscription 'NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN,' the country code 'D' for Germany, the issue year '2027,' the respective mint marks ('A,' 'D,' 'F,' 'G,' or 'J'), and the artist's initials within the inner field.
Collectors can expect the usual generous availability. According to official figures, the circulation mintage will once again total 30 million coins. Like all previous German commemorative coins, this issue will be legal tender throughout the entire eurozone. The coin is scheduled for release in its familiar mint qualities on January 26, 2027. To coincide with the World Money Fair 2027, a special proof-like coincard signed by coin designer Michael Otto will also be issued starting January 28.
