The Federal Ministry of Finance has lifted the veil on the official design for Germany's 2027 €2 commemorative coin. This edition is dedicated to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, continuing the 'Federal States II' series that launched successfully in 2023. As always, the order of issuance follows the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat.
The national obverse design pays tribute to a world-renowned architectural masterpiece: Aachen Cathedral, shown together with the adjoining ensemble of buildings in the city centre. The striking design was created by artist Michael Otto from Rodenbach. By placing the buildings at eye level and rendering the Katschhof square in linear perspective, the design achieves a strikingly realistic effect—giving viewers the sense of standing right on the historic square in front of Germany's very first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alongside the finely detailed depiction of the cathedral, the coin features the inscription 'NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN', the country code 'D' for Germany, the year of issue '2027', the respective mint mark ('A', 'D', 'F', 'G', or 'J'), and the artist's initials within the inner field.
Collectors can once again expect strong availability. According to official figures, the circulation mintage will total 30 million coins. Like all previous German commemorative coins, this piece will be legal tender throughout the entire eurozone. The coin is scheduled for release in its usual mint qualities on 28 January 2027, coinciding with the opening of the next World Money Fair in Berlin.
