The designs of San Marino's 2025 2-euro commemorative coins were announced today.
The theme of the first coin is "Holy Year 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope." The obverse features, at center, a depiction of the Virgin Mary as "Stella Maris" (Star of the Sea), holding the Christ Child by the hand, set against an anchor, a calm sea surface, and a brightly shining star as a symbol of hope. The issuing country "SAN MARINO" and the "R" mint mark of the Rome mint appear on the left; the commemorative inscription "IUBILAEUM" and the year "2025" are shown on the right. The initials "DI MAVLO" of coin designer Gabriele Di Maulo at the lower edge complete the design. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag. The coin is planned with a mintage of 59,000 pieces, including 56,000 in a BU coincard and 3,000 in a proof mint set.
The theme of the second coin is "550th Birthday of Michelangelo." The obverse features Michelangelo's famous black chalk drawing "Head of Cleopatra" with a serpent from 1535, now housed at the Casa Buonarroti Foundation and Museum in Florence. The issuing country "SAN MARINO" appears on the right; the commemorative inscription "MICHELANGELO" and the "R" mint mark of the Rome mint are on the left; and the years "1475" and "2025" appear on either side of the design. The coin designer's initials "TP" at the lower edge complete the design. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag. The coin is planned with a mintage of 59,000 pieces, including 56,000 in a BU coincard and 3,000 in a proof mint set.
