A detail from Judith and Holofernes (1554) by Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574), Italian architect and court painter to the Medici; the state inscription "SAN MARINO", the legend "G. Vasari", the dates "1511 – 2011", the initials of designer Claudia Momoni and the "R" mintmark.
Giorgio Vasari is one of the most influential figures in 16th-century Italian art history - not only as a painter and architect, but above all as the author of the "Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori", a comprehensive collection of artists' biographies that remains a foundational work of art historiography to this day. Born in 1511 in Arezzo, Vasari significantly shaped the image of the Renaissance and Mannerism: he established the very notion of a systematic engagement with art and artists, introduced the term "rinascita" (rebirth) into art-historical discourse, and thereby created the foundation for what we know today as Renaissance studies.
As court painter and trusted architect to the Medici in Florence, Vasari was involved in central building projects in Tuscany, including the design of the Uffizi and extensive fresco cycles in the Palazzo Vecchio. His painterly work, including several versions of the Judith and Holofernes motif from the 1550s, combines courtly representation with the elegant formal language typical of Mannerism. San Marino, which as an independent small state in the heart of the Italian peninsula is closely tied to Italy's cultural tradition, honoured Vasari's legacy on his 500th birthday in 2011 with its own commemorative coin.
