Further information

In the Florence of the late 15th century, Domenico Ghirlandaio was one of the city's most sought-after painters. Born around 1448, the son of a goldsmith, he ran one of the most productive workshops of the early Renaissance — one in which the young Michelangelo worked for a time. Ghirlandaio's pictorial programme combined religious subject matter with precise portraits of Florentine citizens and merchants, which flattered his patrons and gave his fresco cycles a documentary value that later generations came to appreciate. His best-known work, the fresco cycle in the Cappella Tornabuoni in Santa Maria Novella (1486–1490), is regarded as the pinnacle of this combination of devotion and worldly self-representation. For the Cappella Sassetti in the church of Santa Trinità, he created an altarpiece depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds in 1488 — a work that exemplifies the naturalistic conception of the human figure characteristic of his era and survives in Florence to this day.

Ghirlandaio died in January 1494, probably of an epidemic, at around 45 years of age; his works outlived him, capturing the collective image of Florentine society between 1480 and 1490 as few other media have. San Marino, a small state nestled within the Italian peninsula with a particular cultural affinity to the Renaissance, marks the 530th anniversary of the painter's death in 2024 with a 2-euro commemorative coin. The connection is a natural one: San Marino's coinage policy regularly draws on figures and works from Italian art history, placing Ghirlandaio alongside other protagonists of the era already honoured on San Marino's commemorative coins.
