A central composition dominated by the silhouette of a medieval castle with a distinctive tower and other features of historic architecture. The lower half incorporates symbols of the fine arts — a palette and brush, a film camera, and a theatre mask. The commemorative inscription 'TRENČÍN' is placed on the right-hand side within the castle silhouette, with the year '2026' above it. Along the upper edge, the issuing state 'SLOVENSKO', and along the lower edge 'EURÓPSKE HLAVNÉ MESTO KULTÚRY'.
Trenčín lies in northwestern Slovakia, on the Váh river, and is one of the oldest continuously settled places in Central Europe. Even the Romans left their mark here: an inscription carved into rock in 179 AD, commemorating a victory by the legions of Marcus Aurelius, is considered the northernmost surviving testimony to Roman presence in the region. The city's skyline is dominated by Trenčín Castle, whose origins reach back to the early Middle Ages and which served for centuries as the residence of powerful Hungarian noble families — including Matthew Csák, who from here exercised near-independent rule over large parts of Slovakia in the early 14th century. The complex is today one of the largest and most significant medieval castles in the country.
Culturally, Trenčín has established itself in recent decades as a lively small town with a vibrant art and music scene. The Trenčín Festival, one of Slovakia's most renowned music festivals, has taken place annually at the foot of the castle since the 1990s and draws an international audience. Its designation as European Capital of Culture 2026 — alongside Bodø in Norway and Chemnitz in Germany — builds on this profile and brings the city onto the European stage. Slovakia honors this event with a 2-euro commemorative coin from 2026.
