250th Anniversary of the Ratio Educationis
In the last quarter of the 18th century, education in the Kingdom of Hungary, to which the territory of present-day Slovakia then belonged, faced a profound transformation. The Ratio Educationis of 1777, issued under Empress Maria Theresa, was the first comprehensive state school reform in the region: it standardised school types, curricula and the oversight of education, gradually ending the Church's centuries-long monopoly on schooling. The reform organised the school system into elementary schools, grammar schools and academies, established subjects of instruction, and for the first time mandated that children from poorer backgrounds should also have access to basic education. For the territories from which Slovakia would later emerge, the reform marked a structural break: schools were no longer run solely by monasteries or parishes but came under state control.
The long-term consequences of the Ratio Educationis extend to the very foundations of the modern education state. The reform set standards for compulsory schooling and public responsibility for education that were further developed in the following decades and left a lasting mark on the Central European education system. In Slovakia, the document is regarded today as part of the shared Habsburg heritage that, despite later national differentiation, made a formative contribution to the emergence of a literate society. Slovakia's 2027 2-euro commemorative coin marks the 250th anniversary of this milestone in the history of education.
