Further information

Guglielmo Marconi is one of the defining figures in the history of modern communication. Born in Bologna in 1874, the engineer and inventor developed a functioning wireless telegraphy system at the end of the 19th century, making it possible for the first time to transmit signals over great distances without a cable connection. In 1901 he achieved the first transatlantic radio transmission, between England and Newfoundland — a milestone that fundamentally transformed global communication. For his work in wireless telegraphy, Marconi received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909. His developments laid the groundwork for radio, maritime distress communication, and ultimately all modern wireless technologies.

Marconi's ties to the Vatican run deep: in 1931, on behalf of Pope Pius XI, he built the Vatican's first shortwave transmission facility, launching Vatican Radio — an institution that still serves as the voice of the Holy See today. Marconi thus led one of the most significant technical projects the Vatican undertook in the 20th century. He died in Rome in 1937. On the 150th anniversary of the inventor's birth, the Vatican honours this legacy in 2024 with a 2-euro commemorative coin, recalling a collaboration that proved consequential for the history of the Church state.
