Further information

Michelangelo Buonarroti is regarded as one of the most influential artists in European history. Born in 1475 in Caprese near Arezzo, he grew up in Florence and received his first training in the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio. Under the patronage of the Medici, he deepened his study of ancient sculpture — an influence that would define his entire body of work. He first made his name as a sculptor: the "David" (1501–1504) and the Pietà in St. Peter's Basilica (1498/99) display a mastery of marble that his contemporaries considered unmatched. From 1508, at the explicit request of Pope Julius II, he turned to the ceiling fresco of the Sistine Chapel — a commission Michelangelo initially resisted, as he saw himself as a sculptor, not a painter. The result, completed in 1512, covers more than 500 square meters and remains one of the most important pictorial programs in art history. Its scenes from Genesis, including the widely cited Creation of Adam, combine theological programming with a physical intensity that redirected Renaissance painting.

In his later decades, Michelangelo became the leading figure in papal building activity in Rome. As chief architect of St. Peter's Basilica, a role he held from 1546 until his death, he designed the vast dome that still defines Rome's skyline today — even though its construction was completed only after his death in 1564. The Vatican, which employed him across several pontificates, thus stands in direct institutional continuity with his work: no other artist has so lastingly shaped the physical and artistic form of this state. With its 2-euro commemorative coin, the Vatican issuing authority commemorates his 550th birthday in 2025.
