Belgium has a densely developed healthcare system that ranks among the most effective in Europe. Its foundations were laid in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when Belgium, in the course of industrialisation, faced rapidly growing cities and the social challenges that came with them. A network of hospitals, care facilities and state-regulated health insurance gradually emerged, which was expanded after the Second World War into today's social security structure. Today, Belgium's healthcare system offers almost the entire population largely contribution-funded access to medical care, hospital treatment and pharmaceutical provision. The country is also home to major medical research institutions, including the KU Leuven University Hospital, internationally regarded as one of the most respected addresses in biomedical research.

The COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 onward placed extraordinary strain on the Belgian healthcare system and brought nursing staff, doctors and other medical professionals into broad public consciousness. Belgium was among the countries hardest hit in Europe during the first wave of the pandemic and responded with an accelerated expansion of intensive care capacity and a coordinated national vaccination campaign. Public gratitude towards healthcare workers was expressed visibly in Belgium in all three national languages — French, Dutch and German. With its 2022 2-euro commemorative coin on the theme of healthcare, the Belgian state formally honoured this societal achievement, marking its recognition of one of the country's most systemically important sectors.
