The current circuit layout at the centre. To the left, the total length of the circuit — '7.004 M' — and its founding year, '1921'. Above the circuit, the occasion 'CIRCUIT DE SPA FRANCORCHAMPS'. Along the lower edge, the country code 'BE' and the year '2025', flanked by the mint marks of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt and the current Belgian mint master Giovanni Van de Velde. To the right, the initials 'IB' of designer Iris Bruijns.
Spa-Francorchamps is regarded as one of the most demanding and, at the same time, most iconic racing circuits in the world. The track in the Ardennes, in the Belgian province of Liège, opened in 1921 and from the outset made use of the natural topography of the High Fens: narrow valleys, steep slopes, and abrupt changes in elevation shaped the original layout, which ran over public roads. The famous corner combination of Eau Rouge and Raidillon, which still defines the course today, has for decades been a proving ground for drivers and cars alike. On this circuit of more than seven kilometers, some of the decisive moments in Formula 1 history have unfolded, as have landmark races of the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Spa.
Belgium looks back on a long motorsport tradition in which Spa-Francorchamps plays a central role. The Belgian Grand Prix is among the oldest Formula 1 races of all and was, for decades, held exclusively at Spa. Over the course of the 20th century, the track was reworked several times and adjusted to its current length of 7,004 meters, while retaining its character as a high-speed circuit with great weather-related variability. Rain hitting only one section of the track is part of the venue's repertoire like almost nowhere else. On the 104th anniversary of its opening, Belgium honors the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in 2025 with a commemorative coin issue.
