Rhineland-Palatinate – Hambach Castle
Hambach Castle near Neustadt an der Weinstraße is inseparably linked to the Hambach Festival of 1832, one of the most important demonstrations of the German democracy and freedom movement in the 19th century. Tens of thousands of people gathered on the castle hill at the time to demonstrate for national unity, freedom of the press, and democratic rights against the restorative policies of Germany's princely states. It was at this festival that the colors black, red, and gold were first publicly displayed as a symbol of a united, free Germany. The castle itself dates back to a medieval fortress that was destroyed, rebuilt, and altered several times over the centuries before being redesigned in the 19th century.
Because of its significance for the democratic movement, Hambach Castle is regarded today as one of the cradles of German democracy and a central memorial site in German constitutional history. The castle houses a permanent exhibition documenting the events of 1832 and the development of democracy in Germany. The site is regularly used for political commemorative events. With the 2033 commemorative 2-euro coin, Rhineland-Palatinate honors this significant memorial site in the history of German democracy.
