The coat of arms of the ethnographic region of Suvalkija (Sudovia). At the centre the shield bears an auroch in red, surrounded by silver oak branches. Below, the motto "VIENYBĖ TEŽYDI" (Let unity flourish), drawn from the final stanza of the Lithuanian national anthem. Above: the issuing state "LIETUVA" and the year "2022". The inscription "SUVALKIJA" and the Lithuanian mint mark complete the design at the bottom.
In southwestern Lithuania, near the border with Poland and Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, lies Suvalkija — also known in German as Sudovia. The region is one of Lithuania's five major ethnographic regions and is historically closely intertwined with the neighbouring Suwałki region in Poland, from which it also takes its name. For centuries, Suvalkija was a meeting point of Polish, Prussian and Russian influences, which left their mark on language, folk culture and settlement patterns. Characteristic of the region is its open, agrarian, hilly landscape, quite distinct from the forested Samogitia or the lake-rich Aukštaitija. In Lithuanian folk memory, the population of this region is regarded as particularly down-to-earth and industrious — an image that survives to this day in proverbial sayings.
The coat of arms of Suvalkija carries the aurochs as its central symbol, a legendary European wild ox once native to the region's forests and mentioned in numerous historical sources on Lithuanian wildlife. The oak branches around the shield refer to the symbolic power of the tree in Lithuanian mythology and folk tradition. The motto on the coat of arms, "Vienybė težydi" — "May unity flourish" — comes from the final verse of the Lithuanian national anthem and links the regional symbol to a sense of national identity. Lithuania has honoured its ethnographic regions in a dedicated coin series since 2020; the 2022 2-euro commemorative coin is dedicated to Suvalkija, joining the earlier issues for Aukštaitija, Samogitia, Dzūkija and Lithuania Minor.
