A stylised sunflower whose petals are silhouettes of people holding hands, embracing, and sheltering one another — embodying unity, solidarity, and the strength of togetherness. Through artistic means the sunflower is rendered as a rising sun (hope for a new beginning), as birds (freedom, hope, and courage), and as people rising above their circumstances, refusing to submit to an imposed will — an allusion to those who have given their lives and their departing souls. To the upper left: the issuing state "LIETUVA"; along the left edge: the year "2023"; along the right edge: the Lithuanian mint mark. Around the inner ring of the sunflower the inscription "KARTU SU UKRAINA" is legible.
Since 24 February 2022, when Russian forces launched a full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, Lithuania has been among the country's staunchest supporters. This stance has historical roots: Lithuania itself was part of the Soviet Union for decades, experiencing deportations, cultural suppression and a brutal attempt to erase national identity. This shared historical experience continues to shape Lithuania's relationship with Ukraine today — its eastern neighbour is not seen as a distant crisis zone, but as a state fighting for sovereignty and self-determination, values Lithuania itself fought hard to secure. The commonality extends beyond geopolitics: both countries are part of the post-Soviet space, and both have built independence and democratic statehood under difficult conditions.
The sunflower, deeply rooted as a national symbol in Ukrainian culture and standing for light, vitality and hope, became an international symbol of solidarity with Ukraine after the Russian invasion of 2022. In Ukrainian folk tradition, it is regarded as a symbol of the rising sun — an expression of renewal and perseverance even in dark times. In 2023, Lithuania issued a 2-euro commemorative coin titled "Together with Ukraine" as an expression of state solidarity, taking up this symbolism and placing the theme of connection — both human and political — at its centre.
