His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri facing right, with his crowned monogram (a distinctive "H" surmounted by a crown) to the right. Twelve stars are arranged in a semicircle to the right of the monogram. The year 2004, flanked by the mint mark and the engraver's initials, and the country name "LËTZEBUERG" are struck in a circular arrangement in the upper half of the coin ring. The lower half bears the inscription "HENRI – Grand-Duc de Luxembourg".
This coin exists in two varieties: on rolls, PP sets, and PP coin sets the H in the monogram leans left (LU-04 G1); on standard coin sets and standard coincards the H leans right (LU-04 G2). In 2008 a retrospective set was issued comprising the Luxembourg €2 commemorative coins of 2004–2008 (LU-04 G1, LU-05 G2, LU-06 G2, LU-07 G1, LU-07 G2, LU-08 G1).
Henri Albert Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume, born in 1955 as the son of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte, took over the rule of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on 7 October 2000, following his father's abdication. As head of state of a constitutional monarchy, Henri fulfils an above all representative and unifying role, while also championing social issues such as social integration, education and environmental protection. His monogram - the crowned "H" - is the official emblem of his rule and appears on state documents, buildings and insignia of the Grand Duchy.
Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Community and, as a small but economically powerful country, has always been a key player in European integration. The Luxembourg financial centre is today among the most important in the eurozone, and the Grand Duchy was one of the twelve countries that introduced the euro as a common currency in 2002. With the 2004 2-euro commemorative coin, Luxembourg honoured its head of state, whose monogram symbolises the connection between national identity and monarchic tradition - a deliberate choice made in the early phase of the common European currency.
