Banka Slovenije has announced the official design for its 2027 €2 commemorative coin. The coin celebrates Slovenian culture, marking the 100th birthday of the country's world-renowned illustrator Ančka Gošnik Godec. With this issue, Slovenia continues its tradition of honouring outstanding figures from its history through numismatic art.
The central motif on the national side pays tribute to a true masterpiece of Slovenian children's literature. The winning design comes from the duo Daniela Vidmar Podboj and Tomaž Podboj, who triumphed in an anonymous competition against 29 other entries. At the heart of the coin is 'Muca Copatarica' (the Slipper Cat), one of the most iconic and cherished characters brought to life by Ančka Gošnik Godec throughout her career. Alongside this richly detailed motif, the required inscriptions — the artist's name, the occasion, and the issue year '2027' — are seamlessly woven into the overall design.
The competition drew considerable interest from the artistic community, prompting Banka Slovenije to also officially recognise the runners-up. Second place went to designer Jernej Kejžar, whose entry highlighted 'Rajska ptica' (Bird of Paradise), another well-known work by the illustrator. Third place was awarded to Adrijana Šmigoc, who submitted a classic and expressive portrait of Ančka Gošnik Godec for the coin's design.
Details regarding the total mintage and the exact release date in 2027 will be finalised by Slovenia's central bank in the coming months. Collectors, however, can already look forward to a visually captivating coin that, like all €2 commemorative coins before it, will be legal tender throughout the entire eurozone.
