100th Birthday of Ančka Gošnik Godec
Ančka Gošnik Godec is one of the most important Slovenian illustrators of the 20th century. Born in 1927, she shaped the visual world of Slovenian children's book literature for decades, creating a visual language that accompanied several generations. Her work is marked by a distinctive blend of folk-art tradition and modern graphic design — warm colors, clean lines, and a storytelling approach that opened up the Slovenian natural and cultural world to children. Gošnik Godec illustrated classics of Slovenian children's literature as well as new texts of her time, becoming a defining figure in Slovenia's cultural life.
Her work extended well beyond illustration: she was also active as a graphic designer, combining the artistic currents of her era with a deeply rooted connection to Slovenian folk art. In a country that gained independence only in 1991 and has since been building a distinct cultural identity, artists like Gošnik Godec hold particular significance — they created visual spaces in which Slovenian language, nature, and community were reflected long before a Slovenian state existed. In 2027 Slovenia commemorates her 100th birthday with a 2-euro commemorative coin, honoring an illustrator whose work remains part of the country's cultural identity today.
