One of the door handles designed by architect Jože Plečnik (1930–41) for the library's entrance: horse-head figures representing Pegasus, intended to guide visitors into the realm of knowledge. Along the upper edge, the commemorative inscription 'NARODNA IN UNIVERZITETNA KNJIŽNICA'; along the lower edge, the issuing state 'SLOVENIJA' and the year '2024'.
Slovenia's National Library — in Slovenian, Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica, or NUK — is one of the country's most important cultural institutions and at the same time one of the most architecturally striking libraries in Central Europe. Its current site in the heart of Ljubljana was designed by the visionary architect Jože Plečnik, who created and built it between 1936 and 1941. Plečnik combined elements of classicism, Art Nouveau, and a distinctive formal language into a total work of art that has drawn attention far beyond Slovenia. Symbolically conceived down to the smallest detail — from the façade of reddish brick and tuff stone to the handcrafted fittings of the entrance door — the building is today protected as a national monument and is part of the UNESCO Tentative List for the heritage of Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana.
The institution's own history reaches back to 1774, when the foundations for a public library were laid in what was then the Duchy of Carniola. Over more than two centuries, the NUK has weathered the region's turbulent history — from the Habsburg monarchy through the Kingdom of Yugoslavia to the independent Republic of Slovenia. Today, as the legally mandated deposit library, it preserves the country's written cultural heritage, holding historical manuscripts, incunabula, and map collections, while also serving as a modern research library. Slovenia took the 250th anniversary of the National Library in 2024 as an occasion to also honor this cultural heritage numismatically.
