Three comic-strip characters by Slovenian artist and sculptor Miki Muster (1925–2018), from left to right: the tortoise Trdonje, the fox Zvitorepec, and the wolf Lakotnik. Each carries something of its creator's own character: Trdonje's stubbornness, Zvitorepec's cunning, and the perpetually idle Lakotnik are all clearly recognisable traits. The design combines the nature of the medium, the conventions of comics, Muster's later style, and the individuality of his characters. Muster's birth year '1925' and the commemorative inscription 'MIKI MUSTER' appear above the design; the year '2025' and the issuing state 'SLOVENIJA' along the lower edge.
Miki Muster is one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Slovenian popular culture. Born in 1925 in Prevalje, the illustrator and sculptor created a trio of comic characters — the stubborn turtle knight Trdonja, the cunning fox Zvitorepec, and the ravenous wolf Lakotnik — that accompanied generations of readers in Slovenia and the former Yugoslavia for decades. His stories began appearing in children's magazines in the 1950s and became a fixed part of the collective memory of youth and everyday life in the socialist era. Muster's work is marked by a distinctive graphic style: clean lines, sharply drawn characters, and a dry humor that combined social observation with entertainment.
Alongside his work as a comic artist, Muster was also active as a sculptor, leaving behind a broad artistic legacy. After Slovenian independence in 1991, his characters became symbols of a distinct cultural memory — detached from the Yugoslav context but recognized as a shared heritage. Muster died in Ljubljana in 2018; his 100th birthday in 2025 gives Slovenia the occasion to honor him as a nationally significant artist.
