Contour lines derived from the vertical grid of the sculpture 'Ivan Cankar' and arranged into a striking concentric composition that reinforces the archetypal image of Cankar. The sculpture stands in front of the Cankarjev dom cultural centre. The design is a fine example of a contemporary numismatic interpretation of Cankar's portrait, moving beyond tradition into dialogue with the present. Alongside the design, the commemorative inscription, the issuing state 'SLOVENIJA', and the year '2026'.
Ivan Cankar is regarded as the central figure of Slovenian literature around 1900. At a time when Slovenia was not an independent state and the Slovenian language carried little social prestige, he created a body of work that claims a place in world literature: novels, short prose, plays, and essays that depicted social injustice, national oppression, and the fractured condition of modern man with unsparing precision. His prose in particular — such as "Hlapec Jernej in njegova pravica" (The Bailiff Yerney and His Rights) — was quickly translated into several languages and brought Cankar international recognition. He lived for many years in Vienna but returned to Ljubljana and became politically engaged in the cause of South Slavic unification. His language helped shape literary Slovenian and set standards that still apply today.
The Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia's largest cultural centre, bears his name — evidence of how deeply Cankar is rooted in the country's cultural self-understanding. For Slovenia, his work means more than a literary legacy: in an era without its own state, it was an expression of national identity and linguistic dignity. Slovenia honours Ivan Cankar in 2026 with a 2-euro commemorative coin marking the 150th anniversary of his birth on 10 May 1876 in Vrhnika.
