Today, Friday 10 July 2026, the Banque centrale du Luxembourg (BCL) officially issued the two new 2-euro commemorative coins for 2026. In the central bank’s official eShop, both coins are available immediately in the annual bags of five sets each, together with Luxembourg’s new 2026 circulation coins. The issue comes just a few days after the ceremonial first strike at the French mint Monnaie de Paris in Pessac, attended in person by Grand Duke Guillaume and designer Chiara Principe.
The first motif is closely tied to the country’s current change of era: the commemorative coin marking the “accession to the throne and 45th birthday of Grand Duke Guillaume” ushers in a new era on the reverse of Luxembourg’s coins. It is the very first 2-euro commemorative motif to show the finely worked portrait of the new sovereign. In keeping with numismatic tradition, his gaze turns to the left, unlike the earlier strikes of his father Henri.
The second commemorative coin stands under the banner of the European idea and recalls the “40th anniversary of the award of the International Charlemagne Prize to the people of Luxembourg”. This strike honours the historic distinction of 1986, when the citizens of Luxembourg were recognised for their exceptional services to European unification. Both coin designs are by Chiara Principe, who gave the motifs a distinctive sculptural depth.
The issue of the official 2026 euro coin set (KMS) will take place only from next Monday, 13 July 2026. That same day also marks the start of the gradual release of the new circulation coins into normal circulation. The coincards containing the 2026 2-euro commemorative coins are likewise available from Monday and appear in a mintage of 7,500 each.
Given Luxembourg’s customarily moderate mintages and the historically significant change of throne, strong demand for the new 2-euro strikes is expected.
