The Official Journal of the European Commission, document 9584/26, has published the design of Lithuania's second 2-euro commemorative coin for 2026.

The coin's theme is "The City of Kaunas." The obverse depicts a panoramic view of the city of Kaunas. In the right foreground rises the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (also known as the Vytautas the Great Church), with the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul behind it. At the centre stands the Perkūnas House. To the left in the background rise the towers of the Jesuit Church of St Francis Xavier, while the upper left edge reveals Kaunas Castle. The upper right portion of the design features landmarks of the former capital's modernist heritage: the Main Post Office and the Resurrection Basilica. Organic natural forms in the lower left create a vivid contrast with the strict urban geometry. The commemorative inscription "KAUNAS" appears along the upper rim; the issuing state "LIETUVA" below; the Lithuanian Mint mark and the year "2026" at the lower left; and the initials of coin designer Tomas Dragūnas at the upper right. The twelve stars of the European flag are on the outer ring. The coin is planned for Q4 2026 with an expected mintage of approximately 500,000, including 5,000 in BU coincard.

Kaunas, with a population of 297,742, is Lithuania's second-largest city and is situated at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. The city is known for its rich history, well-preserved old town and numerous landmarks, including the medieval Kaunas Castle, magnificent churches and Art Nouveau buildings. Once a leading cultural and economic centre of the country, Kaunas today boasts a vibrant cultural scene, renowned universities and a diverse city life.
