Austria will once again issue a 2-euro commemorative coin next year. The already-published issuing programme for 2027 lists a 2-euro issue marking the 200th anniversary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven. As a further 2-euro coin has also been announced for 2028, this issue could mark the start of a new 2-euro series.
The world-famous composer and pianist spent most of his life in Vienna, where he decisively shaped the Viennese Classical era and entered music history as a pioneer of Romanticism. With his symphonies, piano concertos and the opera 'Fidelio', he created timeless masterpieces of European culture. Beethoven died in Vienna on 26 March 1827.
The coin is due to be released on 4 January 2027 and issued in Austria's customary collector qualities, uncirculated (Normalprägung) and brilliant uncirculated (Handgehoben, HGH). No official design for the coin's motif is available yet, and no exact mintage figure has been published so far. Further details and the presentation of the design are expected from Münze Österreich AG at a later date.
Since the introduction of the euro, Austria has issued its own 2-euro commemorative coins at irregular intervals to mark significant national anniversaries.
