Andorra was among the last European states to join the United Nations: on 28 July 1993, the principality was admitted as the 184th member of the world organization. Until then, Andorra had been a unique case under international law — a co-principality under the joint sovereignty of the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell, without its own constitution and without full representation in the international community of states. Only in March 1993 did Andorra adopt its first constitution, transforming the country into a parliamentary democracy and thereby creating the precondition for UN membership. This step was no mere formality: it marked the conclusion of a fundamental process of state modernization that, after centuries of medieval feudal structure, integrated Andorra into the modern community of nations under international law.
The Principality of Andorra lies at the heart of the Pyrenees between France and Spain and, with an area of about 470 square kilometers, is one of the smallest states in Europe. Despite its small size, Andorra holds full voting rights in the UN General Assembly as a member and participates in international conventions on human rights, the environment, and education. The country's economy traditionally rests on tourism, tax-advantaged retail, and, increasingly, the financial sector. On the international stage, Andorra is particularly active in Francophone and Hispanophone contexts and maintains close diplomatic relations with both of its neighboring countries. Andorra marked the 30th anniversary of its accession to the United Nations in 2023 by issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin.
