Coin description

A 'fallaire' (torch-bearer) in a hooded cloak, caught mid-movement. He swings a bark torch — the 'falla' — whose trail of fire is clearly visible. Behind him, a radiant sun recalls the occasion. To the right, on a circular disc, the year '2023' and the issuing state 'Andorra'.

Further information

The Falles are among Europe's oldest fire festivals and are deeply rooted in the Pyrenean region. Every year, on the night of 23 to 24 June, torchbearers — known as fallaïres — light fires of tree bark on the mountainsides of Andorra and carry the blazing torches, the falles, down into the valley in a ritual descent. The custom originates in pre-Christian times: the fire was meant to strengthen the power of the sun at the summer solstice and protect the community. Over the centuries, this tradition survived in the remote high valleys between Spain and France without losing its essential forms. Andorra is today one of the central strongholds of this rite, which is also preserved in Catalonia, the Val d'Aran, and other Catalan-speaking regions.

In 2015, UNESCO inscribed the Falles de foc del solstici d'estiu (Summer Solstice Fire Festivals) as intangible cultural heritage of humanity — recognition of the custom's cross-border vitality. In Andorra, the festival is closely tied to local identity: the fallaïres traditionally come from particular communities, and the right and duty to participate are passed down within families. The descent from the mountain to the village center culminates in the communal lighting of a large fire, around which people dance and celebrate. To mark the centenary of Andorra's monetary sovereignty, the small state issued a commemorative coin in 2023 that puts this living custom in the spotlight and documents its cultural significance for Andorra.
