Das Bulgarische Alphabet
The Cyrillic alphabet has its roots in the Bulgarian Empire of the 9th and 10th centuries, where students of the Apostles to the Slavs, Cyril and Methodius, developed and spread the script. Bulgaria therefore sees itself as the cradle of the Cyrillic script, used today by hundreds of millions of people.
With EU accession in 2007, Cyrillic also became the third official script of the European Union. The commemorative coin honours this cultural heritage and its European standing.
