The Bundesadler (Federal Eagle) — the traditional symbol of German sovereignty — features on Germany's €2 circulation coin.
The Federal Eagle traces back to the imperial eagle used as a symbol of authority as far back as the Holy Roman Empire, and was adopted as Germany's national emblem by the young Federal Republic in 1950. As a heraldic animal, the eagle has for centuries embodied sovereignty, strength and vigilance, making it one of Europe's oldest state symbols. Its current stylised form derives from a 1928 design by graphic artist Tobias Schwab, originally created for the Weimar Republic.
