The 2002 year holds 9 issues (9 circulation coins). "2-euro coins 2002" is one of the most-searched terms – here they all are at a glance.

Are 2-euro coins from 2002 worth anything?

Most 2-euro coins from 2002 are worth their 2-euro face value. The issues of the microstates are always an exception. Whether a 2002 coin fetches more than its face value depends on mintage, condition and demand – identify your coin and check its rarity:

2-euro coins 2002 – background & themes of the year

2002 is the year of the official euro cash launch: on 1 January 2002 the first circulation coins from all participating countries entered use. The vintage counts 9 issues in total, every single one a circulation coin – commemorative coins only begin in 2004. Germany starts out with the federal eagle as its national design, the motif that has appeared on all German circulation coins ever since.

The microstates are on board from day one too: San Marino features the Palazzo Pubblico government palace (mintage 260,760, of which 160,000 in standard quality), and the Vatican shows Pope John Paul II (mintage 79,000, split into 70,000 and 9,000 in different qualities). Both issues rank among the most sought-after 2-euro coins 2002 of this launch vintage, thanks to their much smaller print runs compared with large countries.

In terms of value: the regular circulation coins from large countries are worth simply their 2-euro face value, while the low-mintage microstate issues from San Marino and the Vatican are the exceptions. To check which issue you own, use the coin identifier; more on the earlier pre-launch strikes is covered under 2-euro coins 2001.
