In May 2004 the European Union carried out the largest enlargement in its history: ten states – among them Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, the three Baltic states as well as Malta and Cyprus – joined the community at the same time. To mark the 25th anniversary of this historic milestone, the sixth official 2-euro joint issue of the eurozone will be released in 2029. Participation by 21 countries is planned, each of which will strike its own version, adapted in wording, with a uniform design. Compared with the last joint issue in 2022, Croatia and Bulgaria expand the circle of issuing states. As with the most recent issues, the final look of the coin will probably again be determined by an official online vote among European citizens. The familiar exception also remains in place, so all participating states may additionally issue their own purely national 2-euro commemorative coins in the issue year 2029.
