Coin description

A symbol of energy — a bird of freedom rising dynamically and powerfully skyward. Lightning motifs represent energy and determination. At the top of the coin the bird's head merges into a stylised rendering of the Columns of Gediminas, while the wings illustrate the harmony between domestic energy sources and new external connections. To the left: the issuing state "LIETUVA"; to the right: the year "2026".

Further information

The withdrawal of the three Baltic states from the Soviet-era power grid was one of the last unresolved chapters of their independence. For decades, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia were synchronized with Russia and Belarus through the so-called BRELL grid — a technical legacy that enabled political pressure and effectively limited energy sovereignty. With the synchronization leap into the continental European ENTSO-E grid, Lithuania closed this gap. The project required extensive investment in grid infrastructure, new interconnections to Poland and Sweden, and close coordination with EU partners. As the largest of the three Baltic economies, Lithuania took a leading role in the technical and political preparation for the switch.

Lithuanian energy policy is closely tied to the broader pursuit of foreign-policy independence that the country has consistently pursued since restoring its independence in 1990. Connection to the Western European power grid is considered a strategic milestone — comparable in symbolic weight to NATO and EU accession in 2004. For Lithuania, energy independence means not only security of supply but also the ability to act without external dependence in a crisis. With the 2-euro commemorative coin, Lithuania honors this step in 2026 as a national event of lasting geopolitical significance.
