Weeks after officially announcing the €2 commemorative coin marking the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death, the Austrian Mint has now revealed the design that will grace this eagerly anticipated 2027 issue. With this reveal, we finally know what the coin will look like—one that also brings an end to a nine-year hiatus in national €2 commemorative coins from the Alpine republic.
The released artwork features a striking, expressive three-quarter portrait of the composer. The design masterfully captures Beethoven's famously intense, brooding gaze, with his wild, thick hair and distinctive collar dominating the center of the motif. Running vertically along the left edge is the country name "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH," with the year "2027" beneath it. Below the composer's portrait appears his name, "BEETHOVEN," while the silver outer ring carries the usual twelve stars of the European flag.
Collectors already have the key dates for this release. The coin will debut before the year is even out: on December 2, 2026, the €2 coin commemorating the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death will be issued in the premium Proof quality. Then, right at the start of the new year—from January 4, 2027—the Brilliant Uncirculated and hand-rolled (HGH) versions will follow. No details have yet been released regarding final mintage figures or the coin's designer. This issue is expected to launch a new series of Austrian €2 commemorative coins.
